Ford US is preparing for the onslaught of the Chevrolet Camaro and recently launched Dodge Challenger with a revamped Mustang -- and these are the first official images of the new pony car.
The 2010 model-year Mustang features a more sculpted exterior, and Ford says this is complemented by larger wheels, retuned suspension and extra horsepower -- developed from engineering experience on the race track and from special editions such as the 'Mustang Bullitt'.
In true Mustang tradition, there's a "steed for every need", with buyers able to opt for a coupe, convertible or glass-roofed configuration, and the powertrain choices include a V6 and a V8.
Although the shape is largely evolutionary, Ford says all the sheet metal is new, except for the fastback roofline. Key changes to the new 'Stang include a more aggressive grille, punctuated with the first new Mustang emblem since the car's introduction in 1964.
Ford says the headlamps and indicators, now integrated into one unit, are modern interpretations inspired by the 1970 Mustang.
On the V6 model, the fog lamps are located on the lower fascia, while on the V8-powered GT, the fog lamps are again housed in the upper grille, but are smaller than those worn by the outgoing model.
The new headlamps, lower fascias, fenders and grille are capped by a powerdome bonnet that's designed to add an impression of muscularity -- as well as enhancing engine cooling.
The 'Stang's derriere features aggressively angled rear corners, a sculptured decklid and a rear-view camera incorporated into the spoiler is available on some models.
The new tail-lamp design features three LED bulbs firing sequentially from the inside for turn indication. The sequential bulbs were a distinct Mustang feature in the '60s and make their return after a four-decade absence.
The wheel-and-tyre combinations are an inch bigger across the board, ranging from 17 to 19 inches, which bodes well for the car's handling and braking. The shocks have been retuned on all models as well.
Meanwhile, the Mustang 4.6-litre V8 gains the tweaks featured on the Bullitt model and power rises to 235kW.
AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is now standard and complements standard front and side airbags. The interior has also been revamped, and Ford says the instrument panel and console flow as one shape to reinforce the Mustang heritage.
