April fool’s joke or credible reinterpretation of the new C7 Corvette?
We’re still rubbing our eyes in disbelief, but what you’re looking at is dubbed the Corvette Stingray AeroWagon Concept, and it’s the handiwork of renowned Corvette tweaker Callaway.
As evident from the accompanying images, what starts out as a C7 Corvette has been transformed into a Ferrari FF-mimicking ‘Shooting Brake’ in which the roofline and rear side window have been remodelled to create a wagon of sorts.
The practical or functional gains of the conversion don’t appear significant (given that luggage space doesn’t seem to have grown by much, if at all) but, if you like what you see, Callaway can convert your new ’Vette to look like this for just under $US15,000.
In its press release, the AeroWagon’s creator says: “Based on market reaction, Callaway plans to produce the conversions coincident with the release of production C7 Corvettes this fall (September). The AeroWagon option is projected to be under $15,000 and available through Callaway dealers nationwide.”
The conversion process begins with chopping the roof of the standard Corvette and slotting in a new carbon panel that’s formed by a moulding process called Kramer Resin Transfer Molding (KRTM).?
Callaway claims the Stingray AeroWagon will be capable of topping 320km/h, but the press release doesn’t specify whether there have been any upgrades to the 6.2-litre V8, which pumps out 336kW and 610Nm in standard form.
Corvette cognoscenti will already be aware that Callaway has turned out several wild modified versions over the years, including the recent C6-based SC652, which cranked out 487kW and 840Nm for a claimed 0-60mph (0-96km/h) dash of 3.3 seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 10.8 seconds.
The company no doubt has similar offerings in store based on the C7 Corvette.
