Robert De Niro to star in new F1 Netflix film The Formula
Robert De Niro and John Boyega are slated to star in a Netflix Original film about F1. Unlike previous F1 films, this one is set to be a little more Hollywood.It seems that Netflix and Americans just can’t get enough of Formula 1 racing at the moment. Off the back of the successful fly-on-the-wall docu-series Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Netflix has just commissioned a new film about F1 starring Robert De Niro and John Boyega.
The Netflix original called The Formula is a fictional drama set in the present day, and it's not just about racing. Written and directed by Gerard McMurray the film centres around a Formula One racing prodigy played by John Boyega (Finn from Star Wars) through entanglement with his mob-connected team boss, played by the one and only Robert De Niro, ends up becoming a getaway driver to save the lives of his family. A very Hollywood interpretation of the F1 world indeed.
McMurray who is also a producer on the film recently announced the movie on his Instagram.
“Feels AMAZING to see this idea in my head finally come to life that I’m writing, directing, and producing.
“My new production company Buppie Productions is teaming up with Tribeca Films & Netflix to bring to you a dope original film coming soon called THE FORMULA starring two of my favorite actors John Boyega & Robert De Niro.
“It’s the story of a young man from Detroit who becomes an international racing star in the world of Formula One under the tutelage of his mentor with old mob ties.”
The film is still in early production so not much is known about other cast members or further detail on the plot. The release date for The Formula has yet to be announced.
The Formula is said to be the first non-documentary film about modern F1 racing since the 1977 film Bobby Deerfield starring Al Pacino.
Racing fans should also get excited about another F1 based Netflix original. Currently in development is a fictionalised mini-series based on F1 champion Ayrton Senna which is due for release in 2022.
