Rolls-Royce reveals stunning Phantom Boat Tail commission

British super-luxury brand’s latest Coachbuild creation designed in honour of a pearl industry pioneer

Rolls-Royce’s Coachbuild Design division has shown off its latest commission, the Phantom-based ‘Boat Tail’, at this weekend’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este classic car show at Lake Como, Italy, and its newest handmade beauty was inspired by racing yachts of the early 20th Century.

Commissioned by a family with a background in the pearling industry, just three examples of the two-tone pearl shell-coloured Boat Tails are being made; each flaunting a rose gold Spirit of Ecstasy mascot.

The exterior ‘colour-way’ is a combination of “oyster and soft rose, with large white and bronze mica flakes” that add a “unique pearlescent quality that changes subtly under different light conditions”, while the “contrasting cognac-coloured bonnet … contains fine bronze and gold coloured aluminium mica flakes complete with a layer of crystal and iced matt clear coat”, says Rolls-Royce.

At the rear, the buttery-fly design ‘hosting deck’ is finished in Royal Walnut veneer inlaid with rose gold-plated pinstripes, which Rolls says ensures “a sensitive and sophisticated appearance”.

The interior is equally as elegant, featuring cognac and oyster-coloured upholstery contrasted against by Royal Walnut trim, with rose gold and mother-of-pearl accents throughout.

According to Rolls-Royce Motor Cars head of Coachbuild Design, Alex Innes, every commission is unique and a special occasion, but this particular project held an additional “depth of feeling” for the team that created it.

“Creating a motor car in honour of a revered client’s father and family history is an extraordinary privilege; a responsibility that we took very much to heart,” he said.

“The commissioning patron’s deep-rooted connection to Boat Tail is an inspiration – the result far exceeds a means of conveyance to become, quite literally, a moving work of art.”

Rolls-Royce hasn’t released a definitive price figure for its latest bespoke creation, but like its $36 million predecessor, we imagine it will be eye-wateringly expensive compared to the already lavish Rolls-Royce Phantom it’s based on.

Who knows, it might even be more expensive than the last one…
