Rolls-Royce under pressure to go pure-electric

Rolls-Royce is being forced to take another look at a pure-electric future as the whole car industry braces itself for more stringent emission regulations, according to new reports,

Speaking to newswire, Bloomberg, Rolls-Royce boss, Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, said: “I can definitely imagine a fully electric Rolls-Royce”, but added that he would only be prepared to offer a pure-electric Rolls-Royce if the tech offers “ranges that are acceptable to our customers”.

Signalling a U-turn on the zero tailpipe emission technology that, until now, was ruled out by the luxury British car-maker despite flirting with the technology with the Phantom-based 2011 102EX Electric concept.

Mueller-Oetvoes said customer response to a pure electric luxury car has only been “tepid” but as cities continue the trend of limiting access to ultra-low emission vehicles his car-maker will be forced to respond.

According to Bloomberg, Rolls-Royce hasn’t made a final decision on whether to push an all-electric vehicle into production and that there was “no time frame for the move” to zero-emission vehicles.
