Royal Land Rover previously used by Queen Elizabeth II is up for auction

A historic 4x4 fit for a Queen, King and Prince is up for auction in the UK

A 1953 Land Rover Series I used by Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family at Balmoral Castle in Scotland is heading to auction in 2023. This Royal 4x4 was built in late 1953 and registered on the Royal number sequence NXN 1 in early 1954 and was the 11th example of the vehicle built that year.

The newly proclaimed Queen had the Land Rover shipped to her beloved Balmoral Estate in 1953 and it was exclusively used by Queen Elizabeth II, The Queen Mother, Prince Phillip, and Prince Charles (King Charles III) until 1966 when it was purchased by the current owner who lived in nearby Ballater.

The Land Rover was stored in a garage for a number of years in disrepair. King Charles III is rumoured to have recognised the unique Land Rover and as a gift funded and encouraged its restoration.

The vehicle has since had a star-studded career, featuring on BBC’s Antiques Roadshow and also led the Land Rover parade at the Queen's Jubilee Pageant in 2021. It’s believed to be one of the most photographed Land Rovers in the world.

The most recent Royal car sold by Silverstone was Princess Diana’s black Ford Escort RS Turbo which made a world record price of £730,000 ($1.23m AUD).

Rob Hubbard Sales Director of Silverstone Auctions, comments: “It’s not often that a vehicle with such impressive Royal provenance like this is offered publicly for sale. Its special features and Royal connections make it exceptionally interesting. This Land Rover would doubtless have been used extensively on the Balmoral estate where we know the Royals loved to picnic. It would have been a familiar and much-loved part of Her Majesty and Prince Philip’s private lives.”

The Royal Land Rover is expected to sell for between £100,000 - £150,000 ($181,193 - $271,790 AUD) and is being auctioned by Silverstone Auctions as part of the Race Retro Event on the 25th of February 2023.
