Rugged Kia EV9 and PV5 concepts headed for SEMA

Kia’s biggest EV and futuristic work horse primed for all-terrain makeovers

Kia has released two teasers ahead of next week’s annual SEMA show, one of which could pave the way for a more adventurous take on the current EV9 electric SUV.

Posting only a single image so far, the 2024 Kia EV9 SEMA concept gets new yellow lighting elements – roof-mounted light bar, three small strips on the grille – and a tougher bumper design with tow hooks, all of which are absent from the current production version.

When it's unwrapped at SEMA, expect the EV9 to also boast a lift kit that will raise the body away from harm and some all-terrain rolling stock, the latter potentially housed within wider arches.

A front skid plate would also be a reasonable addition.

Odds are the beefed-up EV9 will debut with the familiar 283kW/700Nm dual-motor – read all-wheel drive – powertrain already available globally, however the EV9 Earth’s 512km range has likely suffered as a result of the makeover.

Instead of simply being a one-off concept, it’s thought the SEMA creation might pave the way for a new more rugged X-Pro trim – as per the recently revealed Kia Tasman pick-up truck – or even some sort of dealer-fit accessory pack, but more will be revealed at the show.

The other concept destined for Las Vegas is an off-road version of the Kia PV5 minivan/ute which dons similar alterations to the above EV9, albeit with less yellow lighting and obviously wider wheelarches.

Little is known about the PV5’s mechanical make-up, however a key component of its development and eventual appeal is its ‘Easy Swap’ tech that uses standardised electromagnetic and mechanical couplings to switch body styles, meaning a single vehicle could operate as a ute, van, MPV and camper all within the same day.

An all-terrain version of the PV5 would undoubtedly be compared with the upcoming PHEV Mitsubishi Delica revival due sometime before 2030.
