Many have taken a liking to the RX-8 since its launch in 2003, but five years later, the car's styling is beginning to lose its sparkle. Also, these days, it's a little out of step with other, fresher models in the Mazda range.
Time for a facelift then, to make the RX-8 look less Hilary Clinton, more Cameron Diaz.
The facelifted RX-8 is being launched at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week. It's apparent from the pictures here that the RX-8 has a significantly revised front and rear end. Mazda has widened the air intake and fitted a new insert, flanked by revised headlights.
A new five-spoke design for the alloy wheels and larger exhaust pipes are the other identifying features of the upgraded car.
Mazda has added some structural reinforcement, primarily around the front suspension, to improve body rigidity. At the rear, the suspension has been re-tuned and, according to Mazda, yields better handling. The driveshaft is now more rigid too, reducing NVH.
Cars fitted with a manual transmission enjoy the benefits of a lower ratio differential (previously 4.444:1, now 4.777:1), leading to improved acceleration and easier launching.
The RX-8 will be available in Sport, Touring and Grand Touring trim levels in North America. DSC stability control is not available as standard with the RX-8 Sport, but comes with the optional R3 package.
The R3 sport package includes Bilstein dampers and urethane-filled front suspension cross-members.
Other features of the R3 package comprise: 19-inch forged alloy wheels, side sills, a rear spoiler, fog lights and a unique front bumper. Bluetooth connectivity, a 300-Watt Bose audio system, front Recaro seats with leather side bolsters and keyless entry and start system also contribute to the R3 package.
