Audi has released further details of its new baby BMW-basher, the S3.
Currently being launched in Europe, the new S3 is equipped with Audi's turbocharged 2.0-litre FSI engine, rated at 195kW and 350Nm. The Australian version won't quite be as energetic, detuned to 188kW to cope with the 'hot climate' conditions that prevail Down Under.
The latest S3 boasts a new turbocharger with enlarged turbine and compressor rotor that generates 1.2 bar of boost pressure, using a modified intercooler to lower the temperature of the compressed air. Audi says the new TFSI engine features pistons with stronger pins and strengthened connecting rods with new bearings. The cylinder block has also been reinforced, and the head is made of a new, highly heat-resistant alloy.
According to Audi's figures the new S3 is quite efficient, the Euro-spec version returning combined fuel economy figures in the region of 9.1lt/100km (Ed: which we'll believe when we see!!!).
The S3 comes with a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission and Audi's trademark quattro all-wheel-drive system.
'S' visual cues include S3-logo on the front callipers, 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres, front fog lights and xenon headlights with daytime running lights, sports seats and specially designed 'S' instrument cluster. The S3 also sits 25mm lower than an A3 with standard suspension due to firmer spring and shock absorber ratings.
The new Audi S3 is due in Australia in May 2007, priced around $65k.
