Audi has launched a new V-10-powered limo. Dubbed the S8, the four-wheel-drive uber-saloon is powered by a 5.2-litre ten-cylinder engine based on the powerplant of Lamborghini’s stunning Gallardo.
Developing kW (450hp) and 540Nm of torque, the FSI petrol direct-injection engine propels the long wheelbase range-topper from 0-100km/h in 5.1sec. Its top speed is electronically governed to 250km/h.
Audi says the S8 is a significantly more sporty offering than the top W12-powered A8 model. Suspension settings are firmer and lower and modifications to the steering “ensure that the power and dynamism of the drivetrain are translated with precision into locomotion.”
Though based on the Lambo V10, the S8’s engine has a bigger bore (82.5 to 84.5mm). Peak torque is at 3500rpm with 90 per cent available from as low as 2300 rpm.
Thanks to its aluminum-rich construction the S8 weighs in at 1940kg – substantially less than its BMW and Mercedes equivalents.
The new S8 is equipped with six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and Quattro AWD drivetrain. It rolls on 20-inch wheels and 35-series tyres.
But the ‘badge’ of real performance cars are huge brakes and the S8 doesn’t disappoint – front discs measure 385mm in diameter with 335mm at the rear. Optional ceramic brakes – with an expected life of up to 300,000km – are an option.
The S8 adds specific highlights to the standard A8’s already luxurious and well-executed interior. Re-contoured, multi-hued seats feature along with bespoke steering wheel, sporty accents and special badging.
