Safari supports RFDS

For 2008, the organisers of the Australasian Safari are sticking with the Royal Flying Doctor Service as their preferred charity

This year's Australasian Safari kicked off in Kalgoorlie yesterday. For the second year in a row, the route for the event runs through WA and -- also a repeat of last year -- proceeds from the event will be donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which celebrates 80 years of operation this year.

Following a route of 4300km throughout Western Australia, often at very high speeds, the competitors will be doubtless relieved at the choice of charity supported by the event. It's not like a conventional ambulance service can reach you over some of the Safari's longer stages.

"Safari competitors have always really backed the need to raise money for a particular cause and I'm sure everyone will once again see the RFDS as a really relevant organisation to support," said event director, Justin Hunt, on that very point.

"The event is glad to be working with an iconic Australian organisation which supports the outback community. We will be auctioning items at our presentation ceremony in Perth to help raise funds, and undertaking a number of promotional activities along the way to raise the awareness of the need for a well-funded Royal Australian Flying Doctor Service in this state."

Along the way to the final control in Perth, the competitors will pass through remote communities like Sandstone, Meekatharra, Mt Magnet and Geraldton. Leading teams are expected to reach Perth a week after setting out, on August 30.
