Just 10 owners will get the chance to take delivery of Alfa Romeo's new 147 JTD-MJET turbodiesel sports hatch Down Under before Christmas.
Though full deliveries of the first ever diesel-powered Alfa Romeo to arrive Down Under will kick off in early 2006, the Italian marque has landed a 'metric dozen' of the 1.9-litre early.
"The first delivery of the Alfa Romeo 147 JTD M-JET has just arrived and, such has been the demand, we can't keep them locked up until the full stock arrives in January," says David Stone, General Manager of Alfa Romeo in Australia.
Says local importer Ateco, Alfa Romeo has "an outstanding reputation with diesel-powered cars." Worldwide diesel accounts for 76 per cent of all Alfa sales says the importer.
Though fractionaly smaller (in terms of engine displacement) than its petrol-powered Twin Spark stablemate, the 147 JTD produces the same power -- 110 kW. In terms of torque, however, the oiler punches above its weight. In comparison to the 2.0-litre engine's 181Nm, the 1.9 JTD produces 305Nm -- more torque than the 3.2-litre V6 petrol engine in the 147 GTA.
According to Alfa's own stats, the 147 is quicker to 100km/h and goes on to the same 208km/h top speed. Claimed fuel economy is also impressive -- 4.7lt/100km on the highway... 60mpg in the old money!!!
Sharing its specifications with the the five-door 147 TS, the six-speed manual 147 JTD M-JET is priced from $39,990.
