Proton has announced a 'precautionary' recall of its small car Savvy model.
According to Proton the Malaysian automaker regularly conducts random checks of vehicles as part of its customer satisfaction program. The results of recent tests revealed the potential for water to seep into the vehicle's rear wheel bearings, potentially causing components to malfunction.
The recall affects 1600 vehicles, sold from March 2006.
All the necessary checks and replacements will be made at no cost to the customer, according to Proton Cars Australia.
Proton Cars Australia managing director, John Startari said: "This recall is purely a precautionary measure because Proton's highest priority is and always will be the convenience and safety of our customers."
Savvy owners in Australia will be notified by mail by the end of this month to bring their car in for inspection and repair.
The Savvy five-door hatchback is sold with a three-year, unlimited warranty.
