The 2014 Shitbox Rally is part rally, part Wacky Races, but all teams are raising much needed money for research into curing cancer. Most of the competitors are pushing on towards Darwin. The main rule for this event is that the cars haven't cost more than $1000 to buy – which also makes them more vulnerable in some of Australia's harshest driving conditions.
This week motoring.com.au's has been following the fortunes of Regan and Paula – the 'Dunny Dragsters' in their trusty 1998 Ford Falcon.
Regan takes up the commentary...
Even the Where's Wally team fashioned a pair of glasses for their car out of black poly pipe.
We headed off in the morning as the point car for our group. Half way through a 70km stretch of dirt I slowed down for a river crossing, only to have to slam on the brakes as a cow and her calf decide to cross right in front. Poor things were a little spooked.
Paula jumped on the radio to warn our group as the old girl and calf tentatively stepped through the dry river crossing and up the far bank. Cars quickly backed up behind us, but one guy was too slow to react and was forced to swerve, just missing one car and then dodging a tree. They ended up ditching into the river bed, level with our car and up to both axles in the sand. We were blessed that 30 seconds behind us was a support car with a winch and rigging to drag them out. A very lucky incident, somebody could have been hurt quite easily. (Their passenger seat is sitting a little higher now as a rock slammed into the bottom of the car leaving a huge dent).
The rest of the day was uneventful with some pretty boring driving on the Northern Highway. (including lots of road trains)
Pulling into Broome campsite we were all greeted with a cold can of Matso's ginger beer which went down pretty fast. The whole experience and hospitality at Broome was outstanding. Such a great place to visit.
We have finally broken the back of the rally with a third day of 700 plus kilometres as we arrived into Broome. Looking forward to a bit of beach time tomorrow before heading to Fitzroy Crossing.
