LA MOTOR SHOW: Scion iM reinvents Corolla hatch

Warmer 'Corolla' debuts as fourth new model for Toyota's US-based youth brand

Scion has revealed its Corolla-based iM at the LA Auto Show, the model promising to be a 'fun to drive, high-style, high-content and high-MPG' take on the popular five-door hatchback.

The Scion iM is the fourth new model for Toyota's US-based youth brand in as many years, joining the FR-S (86), tC (Corolla Coupe) and iA (essentially a Yaris sedan). Scion says iM is an abbreviation where the 'i' means individual, intriguing and easy on the customer's income and the 'M' modern, multi-faceted and magnetic.

In spite of its looks, it seems the iM isn't a replacement for the much-loved 141kW/180Nm Corolla Sportivo – Toyota's attempt at a 'hot hatch' last sold here in 2005. Instead the single-spec iM adds high equipment grades in a bid to attract younger buyers, the extroverted body kit little more than window dressing.

But if you look at the package as its maker intends, you'll find a good looking car brimming with a long list of equipment. The rear end is supported by a double-wishbone arrangement and the 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/45-section tyres are standard fare.

The Scion iM also includes eight airbags, LED DRLs and tail-lights, hill-start assist, electric-assisted steering, sporty seats with integrated Whiplash Injury Lessen (WIL) structure, an acoustic layer windscreen, 60:40 split-fold rear seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Technology items include a six-speaker Pioneer audio system with 7.0-inch colour display, HD Radio and Aha apps, a reversing camera, Bluetooth telephony and audio streaming, dual-zone climate control, heated folding mirrors and auto headlights.

There's also a suite of accessories and options available, including satellite navigation, body graphics and a number of TRD (Toyota Racing Development) parts, including a cold-air intake system, anti-roll bar and lowered springs.

Under the 'hood' the iM features a familiar (102kW) DOHC 1.8-litre petrol four-cylinder available with a six-speed manual or stepped CVTi-S (continuously variable transmission). Scion says the model is capable of 37mpg (or 7.6L/100km) on the highway cycle.

In the US, the Scion iM is priced from $18,460 (plus on-road costs), the equivalent of $25,885 AUD. The model is covered by a three-year / 36,000-mile warranty, complimentary two-year / 25,000-mile servicing plan and two years' roadside assistance.

The Scion brand is not sold in Australia.
