As if the Toyota Tundra ‘pick-up’ wasn’t already massive enough, Toyota has used Las Vegas’ Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show to display an elongated Tundra-based utility with limousine levels of comfort.
Called the Tundrasine – combining Tundra and limousine, of course – this incredibly stretched, eight-door behemoth is based on a Tundra CrewMax 4x4 1794 Edition and powered by a 5.7-litre petrol V8.
Presented in Midnight Black with acres of brown leather swathing the interior, the Tundrasine’s wheelbase is an incredible 2291mm longer than the 3701mm of the Tundra CrewMax on which it is based. Length exceeds 8105mm -- comfortably above eight metres – but weight balloons to 3618kg -- over a tonne greater than the ‘standard’ Tundra CrewMax.
If the outside impresses, the customised interior has been inspired by the passenger compartments of luxury private jets.
“SEMA is the perfect event to debut this concept vehicle that takes the best of Tundra and turns it into the pinnacle in executive transport . . . limo style,” said Steve Appelbaum, National Engagement Marketing Manager of Toyota Motor Sales, USA.
SEMA is increasing in popularity for major manufacturers with key positions in the US market. For Toyota, the Tundrasine is one of a slew of outlandish vehicles on display.
Given the recent passing of the future date (October 21, 2015) visited in the movie Back to the Future II Toyota unveiled two movie-inspired machines at SEMA: A ‘reimagined’ version of Michael J Fox’s Marty McFly’s dream Toyota truck, using a 2016 Tacoma as its base, as well as a Mirai FCV, the latter converted to a gull-wing two-door coupe and featuring a head up display ‘of the time-travelling destination’, an integrated control tablet and even a ‘Flux capacitor’, to mimic the movie’s DeLorean.
Other highlights include a racetrack tuned Toyota Sienna ‘R-Tuned’ people-mover that apparently outpaces a Camaro SS on circuit with standard engine and gearbox, and the Tonka 4Runner, a concept developed with Funrise Toy Corporation, manufacturer of Tonka toys. Matte black and yellow Tonka graphics, a barrage of above-tyre LEDs, 10-inch suspension lift kit and 20-inch ‘Colossus’ wheels complete the picture.
Also on display are TRD versions of the Land Cruiser, Highlander (Kluger in Australia), Corolla, Camry and Avalon.
