Ignore the showy butterfly doors and 22-inch wheels, you’re looking at the sleek new Genesis coupe that Hyundai will introduce to Australia by the end of next year.
Revealed in teaser images prior to its world debut at last week’s Seoul motor show in Korea, the HND-9 concept provides an accurate indication of what Hyundai’s next-generation coupe flagship will look like. Significantly larger than the cheeky front-wheel drive Veloster coupe, the rear-wheel drive HND-9 measures 4695mm long, 1890mm wide, 1340mm high and rides on a 2860mm wheelbase.
That makes it 65mm longer, 26mm wider, 44mm lower and 41mm longer in wheelbase than the existing Genesis coupe.
Dressed in a classy new interpretation of Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design language, the HND-9 features a long sloping bonnet, massive hexagonal grille, wrap-around glasshouse with blacked-out A-pillars, deeply sculpted side sills and muscular rear haunches.
Providing equally tantalising clues to the production Genesis coupe’s drivetrain, the eye-catching two-door show car is powered by a 3.3-litre turbocharged direct-injection V6 petrol engine that delivers 270kW.
Driving the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, there’s 10kW more power than the current Genesis R-Spec coupe’s 3.8-litre V6 (260kW/400Nm) and 66kW more than the existing 2.0-litre turbocharged Genesis 2.0T R-Spec coupe (204kW/372Nm).
Hyundai said the “luxury sports coupe concept” – the ninth show car to be developed by its Namyang R&D Centre in Korea – is designed to strengthen its ‘Modern Premium’ image
“HND-9 will give customers a glimpse of Hyundai’s future luxury sports coupe models,” said Suk-Geun Oh, head of Hyundai Design Centre.
“Representing an evolution of Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design philosophy, the rear-wheel drive sports coupe concept balances high performance with a sophisticated image.”
