SEOUL MOTOR SHOW: Kia Novo sets language for next Cerato

Novo hints at styling direction for all-new small car in 2016

Kia ripped the covers off a concept car at Seoul this week that insiders hint sets the styling direction for the all-new Cerato.

Due for debut later this year, with on-sale dates locally in 2016, the new Cerato is expected to introduce an evolutionary step in Kia's design language, as well as a new line-up of downsized turbocharged petrol engines.

The concept car that telegraphs this is called Novo. Kia says it features "bold, coupé-inspired styling and a minimalist, driver-focused cabin".

Kia is making much of the Novo's "innovative styling and high-tech interior features". It says the car "takes inspiration from classic, traditional craftsmanship and vehicle design, and reinterprets it for the 21st Century using modern materials and cutting-edge production techniques to create a sharp, dynamic body over a state-of-the-art powertrain".

Novo is built on the existing Cerato architecture and features cab-forward proportions with very short front overhang and a long fastback-style silhouette. Despite the proportions the car remains resolutely front-wheel drive.

Special show-car features include laser headlights and rear-hinged so-called 'suicide' rear doors. Unique 20-inch tyres feature a hollow centre section to produce two high-pressure contact patches to deliver better all-weather traction, says Kia.

Don't expect any of these details for the alloy highlights on the Novo flanks and rear to make it to production, however. It's the overall 'feel' and flavour of the car that will make the transition to the Cerato in production form.

What should make it to Aussie market Ceratos in the next generation is the Novo's pairing of Kia's latest 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol four and seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox.
