Fresh reports suggest a seven-seat version of the 2025 version of the top-selling Tesla Model Y could be available to order in Australia as soon as next month, ahead of the introduction of the big facelift of the mid-size battery-electric SUV next year.
In other markets, the Tesla Model Y has been offered with three rows since it was first launched back in 2020 but never offered on cars made in the brand's Chinese and German factory.
Now, according to X (formerly Twitter) user @elissacopter the seven-seat version of the Model Y has received European approval, paving the way for its launch Down Under.
The X post stated orders could open as soon as October 2024 in Europe, Asia and Oceania (Australia). The arrival of the third row could help the Model Y head off new competition such as the XPeng G6, which is only two-row.
However, there's been no official confirmation yet for the three-row Model Y’s launch here.
Earlier reports had already suggested that a six-seater version of the Model Y would be introduced as part of the big facelift of the Model Y (codename Juniper) but the new reports suggest the seven-seater will arrive before the facelifted version.
Initially, the suggestions online are that the seven-seat version will only be offered in the Long Range all-wheel dual-motor Model Y with the 82kWh battery.
Despite the extra weight, the mid-size SUV will still be able to cover up to 533km and return a very quick 0-100km/h of just 5.0 seconds.
The third row of seats will not be available on either the base rear-drive Model Y or the fastest Performance version, suggest the latest documents.
Government homologation data says the seven-seat option adds just 45kg to the kerb weight of the Model Y, with the gross vehicle mass (GVM) increased by 70kg to suit.
