36-year-old Mercedes-AMG F1 driver Lewis Hamilton has been awarded a knighthood and the title of Sir in the 2021 New Year Honours list. Hamilton holds the record for most race wins with 103 while he is tied with F1 great Michael Schumacher on seven drivers' championships.
Hamilton appeared at Windsor Castle alongside his mother Carmen, who watched her son become the fourth Formula 1 driver in history to be knighted, following on from Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Stirling Moss and Australia’s own Sir Jack Brabham. Hamilton also makes history as the first F1 driver to be knighted while still actively racing in the series.
The wannabe music star and Mercedes’ driver just missed out on a record eighth title this season after a nail-biting finish to the F1 season in Abu Dhabi as Max Verstappen won his first title. Hamilton will return for another season as he looks to break the record in 2022 alongside new teammate George Russell.
