Mazda has shown off a shadowy teaser of a new four-door fastback concept headed for the Japan Mobility Show later this month, prompting many to speculate the long-awaited succession of the RX-8 sports car.
Odds are the new concept doesn’t and won’t herald the imminent return of the Mazda RX-8 or an equivalent thereof; instead, it’s a beacon for where Mazda wants to go stylistically as electrification becomes increasingly prevalent.
But that doesn’t mean more sporty or interesting cars aren’t being planned – the overarching theme of Mazda’s stand at the mobility show is ‘The Joy of Driving Fuels a Sustainable Tomorrow’.
We already know the Iconic SP concept is headed for production next year with its rotary range-extender powertrain, and there are rumours of the next-generation MX-5 potentially scoring some sort of hybrid system.
The concept will make its grand debut at the Japan Mobility Show on October 29 alongside the new-generation Mazda CX-5, the brand’s “proprietary CO2 capture technology” and “algae-derived carbon-neutral fuel”.
The world has been crying out for a new halo performance model from Mazda for more than a decade now, with there having been dozens of twists, turns, flips, flops, U-turns and hints on just such a product.
