SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW: China's first supercar

Chinese-built hybrid hypercar to debut at 2013 Auto Shanghai next week

The first Chinese-built super-coupe – a V12 hybrid hypercar, no less – will make its world debut at the Shanghai motor show next week.

Seen here in teaser images for the first time, the Ferrari-red ICONA Vulcano was styled by design director, Frenchman Samuel Chuffart, who produced the ICONA Fuselage electric concept in 2011 and worked previously at Nissan and Jaguar Land Rover.

Few details have been provided about the front-engined two-seater Vulcano, which is powered by a 670kW-plus (900hp)  hybrid powertrain developed by former Ferrari engineer Claudio Lombardi.

However, its maker says it will hit 200km/h in less than 10 seconds on its way to a top speed of around 350km/h, making it as fast as the best hypercars from Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche.

“The aim of the design approach is to express the amazing capabilities of this extremely powerful car, while maintaining harmonious and generous shapes: bringing together the Beauty and the Beast,” says the ICONA website.

ICONA is an Italian car-maker based in Turin, but established a facility in Shanghai’s Pudong district in 2010 to take advantage of the growing demand for top-end luxury and performance cars in China and Asia.
