SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW: Citroen DS Wild Rubis

Twin-chevron brand reveals SUV addition for its premium DS range at the Shanghai show
Citroen has previewed a China-focussed luxury SUV addition to its upmarket DS line-up in the form of the DS Wild Rubis concept that makes its debut at next week’s Shanghai motor show.
Previewed earlier this week by a tightly cropped teaser image, the exterior of the latest DS concept has now been revealed in full, although only a few technical details have emerged.
Autocar reports the DS Wild Rubis will morph into a production model – badged as the DS7, but at this stage confirmed only for China – at next year’s Beijing show.
According to the British media outlet, it measures 4700mm long, 1950mm wide, 1590mm high and rides on a 2900mm wheelbase. That makes it 170mm longer, almost 80mm wider and nearly 90mm higher than the DS5, with which it shares the same basic platform.
It also makes the biggest DS about the same size as the Volkswagen Touareg, which is apparently one of a number of large premium SUVs that Citroen’s luxury sub-brand is targeting in its quest to offer a full range of premium models to rival the likes of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and VW/Audi.
Although the production version will be initially sold and built – in co-operation with Citroen’s Chinese joint-venture partner Dongfeng – only in China, it’s believed the DS7 could eventually be offered in Europe and perhaps even Australia.
It’s not the first time Citroen has staged the world debut of a new concept in the world’s most populous nation and largest single vehicle market, with the huge Metropolis flagship sedan concept appearing at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
Like the 5300mm-long Metropolis limousine, a showroom version of which is yet to emerge, the DS Wild Rubis is powered by a petrol-electric hybrid drive system.
Reports suggest a 1.6-litre transverse four-cylinder petrol engine will drive the front wheels of the DS7 HYBRID-4, while a rear-mounted electric motor will combine to offer all-wheel drive capability.
While the DS5 is available overseas in diesel-electric HYBRID-4 form, the Wild Rubis’ new petrol-electric hybrid drive system is said to be one of a range of powertrains Citroen is planning for the first DS crossover, the interior of which is yet to be revealed.
In line with the DS3, DS4 and DS5, the DS7 is likely to deliver a more stylised interior than Citroen’s bread-and-butter models, and its equipment levels are also expected to be far more generous.
