SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW: Qoros 2 Concept

Off-beat SUV concept previews new design direction and plug-in hybrid driveline

As Chinese car-makers continue to mature and find their feet, we're seeing more and more interesting designs emerge from the world's largest automotive market.

The Qoros 2 concept, first teased a week ago, is one such design -- a compact SUV that has a distinctive Chinese flavour all its own.

Propelled by the Chinese brand's first plug-in hybrid powercore, the Qoros 2 measures 4181mm long and 2030mm wide (including mirrors), placing it firmly in the compact city-SUV segment and making it even smaller than the 4274mm Mazda CX-3.

The Qoros 2's plug-in hybrid powertrain comprises a small turbo-petrol engine mated to a pair of electric motors, the latter powered by high-density batteries located in the vehicle's floor. The triple-motor layout means all-wheel drive is possible and there's also four drive modes: sport, hybrid, electric and full-time AWD.

Qoros says its latest concept also offers inductive battery charging, meaning that no cables are needed to recharge it – just drive over the correct charge point and away it goes.

There is no talk of manufacturing the concept for production, but there's every chance a visually toned-down vehicle could be derived from the bold design.

However, because Qoros plans to focus its expansion effort on left-hand drive European markets, it's unlikely we'll see the Chinese brand – let alone a production version of the 2 – in the Australian market any time soon.
