SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW: VLF Force 1 Roadster to be unveiled

Viper-based sports car loses roof for Chinese auto show, set to be as quick as coupe

VLF Automotive will unveil a new roadster version of its Force 1 sportscar at the Shanghai auto show next month, it has been revealed.

Originally launched back at the 2016 Detroit motor show, the Force 1 was the work of a cooperation between former Aston Martin design chief, Henrik Fisker, ex-GM vice president, Bob Lutz and aerospace industrialist, Gilbert Villarreal.

Like the coupe, the VLF Force 1 V10 roadster is based around a re-clothed and re-engineered Dodge Viper.

That’s why, under its new carbon-fibre skin, lurks the Viper’s incredible 556kW/865Nm 8.4-litre V10 that’s available with either the option of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

With only a minor weight penalty over the coupe, the Force 1 drop top should match the coupe to 100km/h, taking around 3.0 seconds before topping, eventually, at 350km/h.

Built in Auburn Hills, Michigan, it's thought, like the coupe, the roadster will be built in a production run of just 50 cars.

It's not known what premium over the coupe's considerable $375,000 price tag the roadster will command.

Originally, the coupe launched at the Detroit motor show courted huge controversy after designer, Fisker, was threatened legal action from his former employer.

Aston Martin believes the Force 1 bears a significant resemblance to its own car line-up.

In response, Fisker is reportedly suing Aston Martin for $140 million in damages. It's not known if and how the legal action has been resolved.
