Shannons auction features 'affordable' classics

Be in Melbourne on November 27 to snare a rare low-price piece of automotive history

A genuine classic car or motorcycle could be yours with change from $20,000 when around 80 vehicles go under the hammer at Shannons Melbourne Summer Classic Auction.

Scheduled for Monday November 27 at 40 Corporate Drive in the outer suburb of Heatherton, the Summer Classic will see a dozen cars, several motorcycles and two pedal cars expected to sell with ‘no reserve’ alongside the other classic vehicles up for grabs.

The tantalising collection includes a low-mileage 1955 MG TF 1500 - the last of the old-school MG models - which has had only two owners since new. Believed to be one of the last unrestored TFs in Australia, it is an ideal preservation-class candidate and Shannons believe it will bring between $14,000 and $18,000 at auction.

Another sub-$20,000 British classic is a white 1960 Jaguar Mk II 2.4-litre auto-transmission saloon which comes in unmodified condition with plenty of original equipment, including the tool kit and owner manuals. It’s anticipated the well-maintained Jag will fall under the hammer for between $15,000 and $20,000.

Also wearing the Jaguar symbol is a 1994 XJ-R supercharged saloon which has had only three owners in 23 years and has covered just over 80,000km. Featuring a factory sunroof and a six-stack CD audio system, the high-performance British luxury car should bring between $15,000 and $20,000.

For those with an eye for Teutonic style, the auction will also feature a first-generation 1960 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia coupe which comes to auction with a background of more than 40 years of regularly-serviced, long-term ownership.

In eye-catching red, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia coupe features upgrades including a sunroof and wide wheels, and should attract interest between $14,000 and $18,000.

Motorcycle enthusiasts will be keeping an eye on a Norton Commando Mk3 850, complete with a rear disc-brake update, expected to sell for between $10,000 and $14,000, and a cute 1974 Vespa 150cc scooter with a bullet sidecar which should bring between $6,000 and $,9000.
