Shannons farewells master auctioneer
Bill Wellwood, the face of Shannons over many years, has succumbed to cancerShannons, a focal point for car enthusiasts and collectors for decades, has lost its master auctioneer, Bill Wellwood. Mr Wellwood, employed by Shannons for 25 years, passed away on Monday morning after losing his battle with cancer.
The company has expressed its deep regret at the loss, with National Auction Manager, Christophe Boribon saying: "Bill Wellwood was a larger than life character who touched so many lives. The fun, banter and excitement he brought to every auction were legendary."
Known for his signature auctioneer's garb -- striped coat, top hat and bow tie -- Mr Wellwood was a quiet man who stepped out of character during the auctions to engage the bidders and the audience with his gregarious schtick.
In his private life, he was a committed family man with a passion for classic cars and the Geelong Football Club. During his time with Shannons, he had taken part in 3700 vehicle and charity auctions. Over the course of those auctions, he sold horse-drawn carts and ultralight aircraft, as well as cars, but more importantly to him, he raised millions of dollars for charity.
