Silver Ghost fetches $371,000 at auction

Punters warm to vintage and pre-war cars at Shannons Melbourne Winter Auction

Shannons' recent Melbourne Winter Auction saw enthusiasts and collectors splash-out world-market levelling figures for a number of vintage and pre-war cars. The July 13 auction drove an impressive $1.8m result with Shannons recording an 89 per cent clearance rate on the night.

Topping the catalogue was a restored, locally-delivered 1920 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. The early 'Post Armistice' model sold above reserve for $371,000 after bidding began at $200,000. The 'Ghost' beat a rare, unrestored 1935 Hispano-Suiza K6 Vanvooren-bodied Limousine that made $120,000. Both vehicles were purchased by local collectors and will remain in Australia.

Other vintage/pre-war results included a restored burgundy and black 1929 Stutz Blackhawk Coupe that sold for $52,000, and a right-hand drive 1936 Auburn sedan that brought $46,500.

It seems vintage Fords were also the flavour of the night, with a 1923 Model T Roadster making $16,000, a 1928 Model A Tourer bringing $17,000 and a 1930 Model A Roadster selling for $27,000. A circa-1927 T-Bucket Hot Rod powered by a Holden V8 engine (sacrilege!) fetched $30,000 while a 1928 Model A Roadster in "project condition" brought $5500.

Classic Americana also drew strong interest, with 1950s and 60s Chevrolets doing particularly well. A restored and very collectible fuel-injected 1961 Chevrolet Corvette sold to an overseas bidder for a cool $100,000, while a 1957 Bel Air convertible brought $70,000. A "desirable and nicely preserved" left-hand drive Series 62 convertible in red also made $48,000 on the night.

European sports models proved equally popular, with a rare 1986 BMW535i Alpina B10 sedan fetching $21,000, a tarmac rally-prepared Dino 308 GT4 $36,500, and a 1966 Jaguar Mk II 3.8 $29,000. Closer to home a beautifully restored 1973 Bolwell Nagari 351 V8 Coupe made an excellent $64,000 while a V8-powered 1971 Falcon XY ute modified to 'GS' trim brought $34,000.

As at any Shannons auction, numeric black and white number plates placed well, with $171,000 paid for the Victorian Heritage number '162'.

The next Shannons auction will take place in Sydney on August 10 with Melbournians' next chance to bid coming on September 21.
