Six cars with hidden door handles

The popularity of cars with hidden door handles is on the rise as carmakers strive to achieve a sleek and aerodynamic design for both aesthetic and fuel economy reasons.

Hidden door handles, also known as "flush" or "retractable" door handles, are designed to blend seamlessly with the body of the car when not in use, giving it a cleaner and more streamlined appearance. When the doors are locked or closed, these handles are typically flush with the surface of the car, reducing wind resistance and contributing to better fuel efficiency.

Here six cars that work the hidden door handles into their designs.

Honda's small SUV the HR-V has a coupe-inspired design thanks to its sloping roofline and its integrated rear door handles which give it the illusion (if you squint) of being a two-door.

It has been a staple of the funky Nissan Juke's design from day one, its hidden rear door handles. Back when it first launched in 2010, it was a rarity to see such quirky and unique components on a car. Today its in good company and still wears it well.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV is unique for so many reasons, one of which is its e-Latch doors. The e-Latch system replaces traditional exterior door handles with a sleek, flush-mounted button located near the front edge of the doors. When the driver or a passenger approaches the car with the key fob or a smartphone connected through Bluetooth, they can activate the e-Latch system by touching the button. The system then unlatches the door electronically, allowing the user to pull the door open.

The Range Rover Velar is equipped with what Land Rover calls "Flush Deployable Door Handles". These handles sit flush with the body of the car when the vehicle is locked or in motion, reducing aerodynamic drag and improving fuel efficiency.

When the Range Rover Velar is unlocked or when a person with the key fob approaches the car, the flush door handles automatically pop out from the door's surface, allowing the user to grab and open the doors. So futuristic!

The Lexus NX is the first Lexus model to be fitted with the e-Latch electronic door release system which replaces the familiar internal door handle with a push-button switch positioned next to the armrest in the door panel. Lexus says that the ease of use with one smooth and simple motion is inspired by the traditional fusuma sliding paper screen room dividers in Japanese homes.

The Ford Ranger's interior door handles have taken a retro approach which is the current functionality of its stablemate the F-150. The one-hand opening design allows users to squeeze the handle and simultaneously push the door open with one arm, instead of using one to pull the handle and the other to push the door open.
