Six of the most weird and wonderful wedding cars

With spring officially sprung, the season of ‘I do’ is upon us and the collective planning of brides (and the occasional groom) can be heard all around Australia deciding on every last detail of the big event, from flowers to the dress, invitations and of course, transportation.

As well as playing a critical role in functionality, wedding transportation can set the tone of the wedding day aesthetic explains Darcy Allen, Senior Wedding Sales Manager at Easy Weddings.

“Cars, limos, Kombis, and other modes of transport are usually one of the key moments captured on camera, so it’s important that the right vehicle is chosen to create the vibe the couple is going for,” she says.

And with the abundance of choice, the world really is your oyster (or whatever the car equivalent is) when it comes to choosing your wedding day ride.

Here are six of the weirdest and most wonderful modes of wedding transportation that Australia has to offer.

Classic and Vintage Cars

As they say, classics never go out of style and it would seem that this also applies to wedding cars. According to Easy Weddings 2023 Australian Wedding Report, both classic and vintage cars are the most popular (equal 26%) wedding transport in the country.

One of the highest-rated suppliers on the Easy Weddings database is Always Classic Cars, a Victorian hire company that has a fleet of Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Jaguars dating back to the 1930s which are of course chauffeur-driven for the big day.

“With vintage weddings becoming a popular theme for Australian weddings in recent years, it’s no surprise that Kombis are a popular choice for wedding transport,” says Allen.

“They are a stylish, timeless and fun way to travel, adding an element of fun and uniqueness to your wedding day. If you’re having a beach wedding, nothing beats a classic camper van for relaxed transport that your whole bridal party can fit inside, “she says.

Kombis also make the perfect backdrop or setting for photos adding some really groovy vibes to your wedding snaps.

Limousines

The second most popular mode of wedding transport (20%) according to Easy Weddings, is none other than the stretch limo, a timeless vehicle chosen by 1 in 5 couples.

Spacious, classic and elegant, the limo provides both functionality and style for the bridal party.

Famous Rides

If pop culture is more your thing, embracing your movie star persona in replica cars from the TV series Supernatural or John Wick might be the icing on your wedding cake.

A boutique Gold Coast wedding car company, Famous Rides boasts a sleek black 1967 Chevrolet Impala with a 350 small block V8 and a shiny chrome trim — a stunning replica of Sam and Dean's car from Supernatural and a Mustang Sally, a replica of John Wick's iconic Ford Mustang which unlike Wick is definitely civilised.

Checker Cabs

If you are in a New York state of mind, these cars could be the perfect choice for you.

With an abundance of personality and oh-so-very New York City, the bright yellow and checker-striped cab 8-seater limousines owned by Melbourne’s Checker Cabs create a definite statement for your big day.

With exteriors that definitely generate that ‘wow’ factor, perfect for photos and the cab’s interiors providing comfort and space for the entire wedding party, all bases are covered.

Red London Bus

“This vintage Red Routemaster bus made its way from London to Australia in 2006 and has been lovingly maintained to offer unique wedding transport in Sydney,” Allen says.

The bus which is owned by Red London Bus Sydney offers couples the chance to travel in style on their wedding day while capturing endless photos against the shiny red exterior of the bus.

The bus dates back to the 1960s and seats 69 total passengers, which makes travelling from the ceremony to the reception venue a breeze and definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

So, whether you are after something chic and classic, personality-filled and unique, or something in between, there is no shortage of weird and wonderful wedding vehicle options out there, the only problem might be deciding.
