Skoda Kamiq pricing announced

High-tech features for Czech car-maker’s new small SUV despite a sub-$27,000 starting price

Australia’s newest small SUV, the Skoda Kamiq, has been priced from $26,990 plus on-road costs (or $27,990 drive-away) and is available to order now ahead of first Australian deliveries in late September 2020

Offered with two engines choices – 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre turbo-petrol units – the Skoda Kamiq will be available in three equipment grades, all fitted as standard with adaptive cruise control, a digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone charging, a powered tailgate and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Pitched as a premium European offering in a segment that includes budget-priced Asian rivals such as the Mazda CX-3 (from $22,710), Hyundai Kona ($24,300) and upcoming Toyota Yaris Cross, the Skoda Kamiq’s main rivals will be the upmarket Volkswagen T-Cross.

Both the Kamiq and T-Cross are based on the same MQB-AO platform architecture as their small-car cousins, the Skoda Scala and Volkswagen Polo, and come with similar technology, but the Skoda undercuts the Volkswagen T-Cross SUV by $1000.

As with the Volkswagen T-Cross, an 85kW/200Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine is fitted to entry-level Skoda Kamiq 85TSI variants, which come with either six-speed manual or seven-speed twin-clutch automatic DSG transmissions.

Top-spec Skoda Kamiq Monte Carlo and Limited Edition variants are powered by a bigger, more powerful 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine (110TSI) and are seven-speed DSG auto-only.

Measuring 4241mm long, 1793mm wide and 1531mm tall, making it smaller than the Skoda Karoq mid-size SUV (from $32,990), the Kamiq is not a large vehicle by any stretch.

But Skoda says it comes with plenty of useful interior features, including a cargo net and double-sided mat in the boot, plus a range of thoughtful storage cubbies and bag hooks.

Australian Skoda Kamiq prices are listed below and in terms of equipment levels, headline exterior features for all model grades include 18-inch alloy wheels, silver roof-rails, tinted windows and LED tail-lights with dynamic indicators.

All Skoda Kamiq variants also come with a high level of safety features, such as lane assist, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, seven airbags, fatigue detection, reversing camera, rear parking sensors and rear manoeuver braking assist.

Interior features for all Skoda Kamiq grades include dual-zone climate control, ambient cabin lighting, a digital instrument panel (virtual cockpit), 8.0-inch touch-screen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, an eight-speaker audio system, keyless entry, automatic powered tailgate and a sporty flat-bottom leather steering wheel with lots of buttons.

Convenience features include rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights and an auto-dimming interior mirror, plus powered, heated and folding side mirrors.

Step up to the Skoda Kamiq Monte Carlo model and you get sports seats, a panoramic glass roof, sports pedals and black roof lining inside.

Exterior upgrades involve unique 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights with cornering and fog lights, dynamic front indicators, sports suspension that lowers the SUV by 15mm and adds a drive select mode, plus a black pack (wing mirror caps, grille edging, rear badges, rear diffuser).

The Limited Edition, as the name suggests, will only be around for a short while and has much the same equipment as the Monte Carlo, only with the regular alloy wheels and no black pack.

Inside, however, there are upgraded leather/suedia seats, an upgraded and larger 9.2-inch touch-screen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay, power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front and rear seats plus an autonomous parking assistant and front parking sensors.

Skoda says wireless Android Auto connectivity will arrive from late 2020.

While there will only be two permanent Kamiq variants (base and Monte Carlo), there are two option packs available for the former and one for latter, adding popular options but also jacking up the price significantly.

The driver support pack ($4100) for base Skoda Kamiq adds leather/suedia seat upholstery, automatic parking assistant, blind spot detection, heated front and rear seats, power-adjustable driver’s seat and rear-cross traffic alert, which warns of approaching vehicles when backing out of tight parking spots.

There’s also a tech pack ($3800) for the base model, adding the more advanced 9.2-inch ‘Amundsen’ touch-screen infotainment system with satellite navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay. It also brings adaptive LED headlights, the fancy strobing front indicators and an upgraded stereo system.

The travel pack ($4300) for the Skoda Kamiq Monte Carlo adds blind spot detection, automatic parking assist, plus the bigger 9.2-inch touch-screen infotainment system with sat-nav and wireless Apple CarPlay. Heated front and rear seats are also part of the travel pack, along with steering wheel mounted paddle gear shifters.

Like all Skoda vehicles, the Kamiq SUV is backed by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre factory warranty and a capped-price service program with two service pack options (see below).

The Skoda Kamiq brings to three the number of SUV models now available from the Volkswagen Group’s Czech brand, following the Karoq mid-sizer ($33,000-$40,000) and the large Kodiaq seven-seater ($45,000 to $66,000), which is the brand’s top-selling vehicle so far in 2020.

Skoda Australia has previously stated that Kamiq demand will outstrip supply in the first few months as initial shipments arrive Down Under.
