Skoda teases Kodiaq RS record lap at Nurburgring

Czech car-maker's forthcoming RS flagship thought to have bagged the fastest Nurburgring lap for a seven-seater

Skoda has released a video tease of its upcoming Kodiaq RS with the claim the forthcoming fast SUV has set a 'lap record' at the Nurburgring in Germany.

Announcing that all will be revealed on June 14, the video gives us our first glimpse of how the performance SUV is shaping up but not much else or, indeed, what lap record has been broken.

From the brief glimpses shown in the video, the Kodiaq RS appears to get sportier styling that includes a revised front bumper with larger air intakes.

The short vid that features racer and former Top Gear TV host, Sabine Schmitz, also appears to show larger 19- or 20-inch rims fitted to the Kodiaq. Painted bright red, behind the wheels there's clearly a set of larger brake callipers.

It's thought that both five-seat and seven-seat versions of the hot new SUV will be offered -- the latter used for the Nurburgring attempt, which will allow the Czech car-maker to claim the seven-seater production vehicle lap record.

Helping set the record lap is the fact the Kodiaq RS is rumoured to come with a twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engine that generates 177kW/500Nm.

Thanks to standard all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, that should be enough for the fast SUV to hit 100km/h in just 6.5 seconds and top out at around 240km/h.

As well as the uprated brakes, the Kodiaq RS will get lower, firmer sport suspension and subtle tweak of the large SUV's aerodynamics for greater stability at speed.

The flagship Skoda RS SUV's fate Down Under is still uncertain following concerns it won't have enough cooling for a 'hot weather' market like Australia.

If it does, like other VW Group products (the Golf R and Audi S3), the Kodiaq RS might have to be detuned to comply with the Volkswagen Group's internal standards.

Set to make its official premiere at the Paris motor show in early October, the new Skoda Kodiaq RS will make its online debut either this Thursday (June 14) or in the next few months leading up to the show.
