Skoda has announced its all-new Kodiaq SUV will support the final stages of the world famous Tour de France cycle race in a bid to build the hype surrounding the launch of its first big seven-seat SUV.
Driven by former 1987 winner for the Tour, Irishman Stephen Roche, the car that will lead the racers through the Paris’ Champs-Elysées boulevard to the finishing line will wear full white, grey and black camouflage.
Marking the Czech brand's expansion into SUVs the Kodiaq arrives here mid-2017, while a more orthodox and larger second-generation Yeti compact SUV is expected Down Under around mid-2018. At least two more SUVs are said to be in development for global launch by 2020, bolstering Skoda’s customer appeal.
Officially unveiled at the Paris motor show this September, the Kodiaq will be offered in both front- and all-wheel drive.
Powered by turbo petrol and diesels, a plug-in hybrid will arrive soon after launch but that version is unlikely to head Down Under.
The Toyota Kluger, Hyundai Santa Fe and recently launched Mazda CX-9 will all be rivals. It's not known if the Kodiaq will undercut them.
The two other Skoda SUVs that will follow are thought to be a coupe, five-seater and a small SUV to rival the Mazda CX-3.
All the SUVs will be based on the latest version of the flexible MQB platform.
