Skoda teases new coupe made by apprentices

Czech car-maker gives us a glimpse of trainee’s compact coupe that will be unveiled in May, hints at Rapid coupes of past

Skoda has released an image of a compact coupe concept that’s been created by 27 new apprentices studying at the Skoda Vocational School at the Czech firm’s Mlada Bolesav HQ.

Known only as ‘Skoda Apprentice III’, the new concept car is the third time young workers attending the school have been allowed to get inspired and busy with a gas axe to create a new car.

The finished car, made under the supervision of lecturers at the school, will be unveiled this May.

Tasked with building their ‘dream car’ the apprentices were believed to have been inspired by some of famous rear-engined coupes of the Czech maker’s past.

Based on what looks like the current Rapid, the compact coupe is said to be more rakish from the D-pillar backwards and sport a rear hatch, a long glass roof and a pair of extended doors.

The two-door coupe will also be painted in two-tone red and black.

Visiting the project, Skoda board member Bohdan Wojnar said: “Just like its predecessors, this project will show how great our trainees’ technical and manual skills are.”

Previous Skoda trainee projects include the 2014 Citigo-based CitiJet and last year’s 2015 FUNStar ute.

The Vocational School was founded all the way back in 1927. Currently, there are more than 900 students enrolled in three- to four-year tranining program.
