The Mercedes-Benz SL 400 is bringing turbocharged V6 performance to the three-pointed star's premium sports car range – and it's slotting in at the lower end of the range, not at the pinnacle. Despite the model name, the SL 400 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6, developing 245kW and 480Nm. Output is 20kW and 110Nm higher than the naturally-aspirated 3.5-litre V6 in the SL 350 that is replaced by the SL 400. Peak torque for the forced-induction V6 runs in a plateau from 1600 to 4000rpm.
Euro 6-compliant, the V6 is an oversquare design (88.0x82.1mm bore and stroke) rated at 7.3L/100km in the NEDC (New European Drive Cycle) combined-cycle test. Driving to the rear wheels via a 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission, the engine propels the SL 400 to 100km/h from a standing start in 5.2 seconds, the manufacturer claims.
Standard features include a multi-function steering wheel, adaptive damping, Airscarf neck heating, Comand system*, electric parking brake, full leather trim, Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound audio, 14 speakers (with FrontBass woofers), digital audio (DAB+), digital TV, iPod integration with USB port, multi-function infotainment display, electric windows, keyless entry/start, sports pedals, electric steering column adjustment, rain-sensing wipers and climate control.
In addition, the SL 400 rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and comes equipped with safety features such as an active bonnet, six airbags, Attention Assist, flashing LED brake lights, auto headlights, a reversing camera and tyre pressure monitoring system.
In Australia the SL 400 is priced at $229,000, which is $2470 more than the SL 350. The SL 400 is introduced to the local-spec SL range along with a new model year upgrade which brings with it a price hike for all variants.
As we reported previously, the revised SL 63 AMG for the new model year is powered by an uprated engine developing 430kW and 900Nm.
Prices for the new SL range are as follows, with price increases in brackets:
SL 400 - $229,000 (+$2470 over SL 350),
SL 500 - $312,000 (+$4970),
SL 63 AMG - $399,000 (+$14,470),
SL 65 AMG - $481,000 (+$10,470)
