MG is teasing a new flagship sedan in its native Chinese market to sit above the MG6 mid-sizer, predictably called the 2023 MG MG7.
However, prospective Aussie buyers should not get their hopes up because MG Motor Australia has no plans to introduce the almost five-metre long four-door.
An MG Australia spokesperson confirmed to carsales that while the brand is “constantly listening to the needs and wants” of its customers, it “will not be bringing the MG7 into the Australian market” at this stage.
The decision is no doubt influenced by the continuing decline of the medium and large passenger car markets, although MG continues to study the MG5 EV for local release.
Nevertheless, the MG7 is quite the looker with an exterior design blending some of the best elements of some established high-end fastback sedans like the Audi A7 Sportback (silhouette) and the Alpina B8 Gran Coupe (rear design and colour).
While we haven’t seen the MG7’s front-end, the star of the rest of the show is the delectable hip line that tracks upwards with the window line and simultaneously bulges outwards to add an extra sense of purposefulness and muscularity.
Exactly how muscular the driving experience will be is another thing all together, with MG so far confirming the flagship ‘Black Label 405 VTGI’ variant will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine.
No outputs, drive configuration or transmission details have been released yet, but MG does already have a force-fed 2.0-litre in circulation; namely under the bonnet of the MG HS X variants.
The turbo-petrol engine churns out 168kW/360Nm in that particular application and drivers all four wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
We’d expect those figures to be bumped up at least a little bit for the MG7 given its position towards the top of the combustion-powered MG model range, which in turn would make it a theoretical rival for the Hyundai Sonata N-Line, Skoda Superb 206TSI, Mazda6 GT, Kia Stinger 200S and Volkswagen Arteon 206TSI R-Line – if it was to make it here.
If some of the early teasers are anything to go by, a reasonable amount of performance will be on offer; enough at least to warrant the inclusion of an integrated rear spoiler that rises up from the boot lid and expands outwards.
“When the legendary green loved by European aristocrats is perfectly integrated with the taste, performance and charm of MG, the Black Label MG7 will start with a brand-new attitude, once again stunning the era,” MG said via its social media channels.
“Its [Black Label’s] first model, MG7 will take you to the extreme.”
Exactly how many other Black Label-branded models MG is planning to release remains to be seen, but given Australia’s taste for performance cars we’re sure a few will be on the local division’s radar.
