Smarter off-road software for Range Rover

Land Rover claims world first for new All-Terrain Progress Control facility in Range Rover and Rangie Sport
A new fixed-speed control system for Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will reduce demands on the driver in arduous off-road terrain.
Named 'All-Terrain Progress Control' (ATPC), the feature offers drivers a spread of set speeds selectable from 1.8km/h to 30km/h. The system not only maintains the chosen speed, it ensures traction and braking are optimised in all circumstances.
Land Rover claims that ATPC is more capable of maintaining safe operation in the bush than novice off-roaders can manage behind the wheel. Drivers can opt to select a speed either at standstill or on the fly, and the system works equally well in reverse.
ATPC, which is available on vehicles fitted with dual-range transfer and Terrain Response 2, is just one of the enhancements for the new model year Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.
Further to earlier information from the company, Land Rover will offer a revised TDV6 (diesel V6) in the forthcoming model year, delivering fuel consumption as low as 6.9L/100km, and an upgraded SDV6 diesel, producing 225kW (+10kW) and 700Nm (+100Nm).
The improvement in fuel efficiency for the TDV6 engine (8.5 per cent for the Range Rover, 5.7 per cent for the Sport) is the result of migrating from a twin-turbocharger installation to a ball-bearing single turbocharger. Other changes to the engine include the adoption of Low Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (LPEGR), a two-stage oil pump that reduces parasitic engine losses and a revised design of fuel-injector nozzle.
Much the same upgrade applies to the SDV6 engine in the Range Rover Sport (other than the move from the twin turbocharger set-up). Fuel consumption is now 7.0L/100km, a 7.0 per cent reduction.
The supercharged petrol SCV6 engine continues to produce 250kW and 450Nm, but Land Rover claims it is now 1.9 per cent more frugal, due to a new thermostat (reducing the time taken to reach normal operating temperature), laser-drilled injectors, revised camshaft chain guides, a two-stage oil pump, a diamond-like coating for piston and gudgeon pin, and lower viscosity oil.
Land Rover has previously revealed the torque hike for the SDV8 engine, and a stronger ZF eight-speed automatic transmission for the diesel V8 variants, plus a lighter version of the transmission for the supercharged petrol V6 variants.
The company has announced the local Range Rover Sport product portfolio will grow with the inclusion of a hybrid model
And finally, the importer has confirmed that the Range Rover Sport SVR will reach Australia as part of the MY15 range, in the second quarter of next year.
Other changes for 2015 include two new colours: Yulong White for both vehicles and Kaikoura Stone for the Range Rover Sport. From March of 2015, which is when Land Rover expects to begin delivering the revised models in Australia, production will incorporate a head-up display. This feature will display vehicle speed, gear position and shift indicator, cruise-control information and satellite-navigation instructions, at the driver's whim.
"Range Rover and Range Rover Sport offer an unrivalled combination of performance, efficiency, design leadership and off-road capability," says Phil Popham, Group Marketing Director, Jaguar Land Rover.
"Our latest updates capitalise on these strengths, with our ground-breaking new All Terrain Progress Control, along with extra-efficient six-cylinder engines, which underline Land Rover's commitment to sustainability," Popham was quoted saying in a press release issued today.
