The Prius II hybrid has proved a huge success (particularly in the US) for Toyota, and the world's No 1 carmaker is now plotting its third-generation version.
Want to know how it will look? Well, a few clues may lie in this futuristic looking concept. Dubbed the 1/X (a name that's bound to please algebra fiends), the design study is scheduled to take its bows on October 24 at the Tokyo motor show -- it's one of nine concepts that Toyota plans to exhibit at its domestic expo.
In case you're wondering about the 1/X moniker (it's actually pronounced "1/Xth"), Toyota says it stems from the fact that its concept car weighs 1/Xth the weight of similarly sized vehicles.
To put it into its true perspective, the 1/Xth tips the scales at just 420kg, which is about a third of the weight of the Prius II.
Its waif-like mass is largely the result of its carbonfibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) frame, which although light is said to provide good occupant protection in crashes.
The 1/X is propelled by an enviro-friendly powertrain that combines a flex-fuel 500cc engine and plug-in (ie rechargeable from an external power source) hybrid drive system. The powerplant is housed beneath the rear seat and drives the rear wheels.
Its status as the ultimate in fuel misers seems assured as Toyota claims it's twice as frugal as the Prius II, even though it's roughly the same size and can accommodate four adults. It's no mean feat, given that the Prius uses just 4.4 litres of unleaded per 100km.
Visually, the 1/X has a vague family resemblance with the current Prius, even though its rear-engine, rear-drive layout has more in common with Mitsubishi's i minicar and Volkswagen's recently revealed Up! Concept.
The huge greenhouse should provide the cabin with a bright, airy feel, but it mightn't be the best thing for stinking hot summer days.
