A survey conducted by the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) reveals the current cost of owning a selection of cars in different market segments (more here).
Lowest cost entrant in the light car segment was the Hyundai Getz ($116.54 per week).
Toyota's Corolla was the least expensive car to run in the small car segment ($154.49 per week), although the Ford Focus was snapping at the Toyota's heels with a cost of $156.49 per week.
The Mitsubishi 380 was the most economical of the large cars, at $200.44 per week and the Kia Carnival was the people mover boasting the lowest cost of ownership ($216.68 per week).
It was not so good news in the case of Diesels and hybrids; the Toyota Prius ($200.63) was more expensive to run than the Mitsubishi 380 and within $11 per week of the Ford Falcon e-Gas ($211.43).
The Honda Civic Hybrid was more expensive to run than the conventional Civic, but cheaper than the Diesel variant of the Volkswagen Golf. High purchase price seemed to be a significant factor in the relative expense of owning one of the lean, green, frugal machines.
Honda's CR-V took the win among the SUVs, but did so with higher running costs against its principal rivals. In the CR-V's favour, pricing was identical for all four vehicles selected in the light SUV category, handing the CR-V an advantage based on depreciation and insurance.
