The all-electric 2024 Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer has been unwrapped in Europe, revealing a rakish yet spacious battery-powered wagon that is said to combine decent load-lugging potential with a long range of up to 685km.
Volkswagen says that will make its latest EV attractive to families or long-distance drivers who might otherwise buy the new VW Passat, which won’t be sold in Australia.
Based on the Volkswagen ID.7 fastback sedan but still managing to feature a stylish rear-end, the new VW ID.7 wagon rides on a generous 2971mm wheelbase and measures a sizeable 4961mm long, 1862mm wide and 1535mm tall.
As well as offering generous space for up to five adults, the ID.7 Tourer’s biggest asset is its ability to offer up to 605 litres of space with the rear seats in place (73 litres more than the ID.7 sedan) and more than 1714 litres with the second row folded into the floor.
If that’s not enough, VW will also offer the option of a roof box that adds an additional 460 litres of carrying capacity.
The Tourer can accommodate items measuring up to 1075mm long without folding the rear seats, has a maximum load length of 1948mm behind the front seats and squeeze in packages that measure up to 1000mm wide between the wheel-arches.
Like the ID.7 sedan, the new ID.7 Tourer gets a panoramic roof with polymer-dispersed liquid crystal technoly that sees it turn opaque at the touch of a button to offer maximum UV protection.
Driving the ID.7 Tourer is an electric motor that produces 210kW of power and 545Nm of torque.
Faster GTX versions of the ID.7 Tourer will boast a 250kW dual-motor powertrain that will see the big wagon sprint to 100km/h in just six seconds.
From launch, European owners will only be able to specify a 77kWh Pro battery, but later on a larger 86kWh Pro S battery pack will allow drivers to cover up to 685km.
The larger battery can cope with a 200kW top-up, with a 10-80 per cent charge taking under 30 minutes.
Sitting on 19-inch rims as standard, the ID.7 Tourer will be available with larger 21-inch alloy wheels.
New technologies will include Volkswagen’s Level 2+ Travel Assist semi-autonomous cruise control system featuring auto lane changing.
The big electric wagon will also be able to park itself even without occupants onboard when its ‘driver’ uses a smartphone app.
Inside, there’s a new smart climate control system with active vents and a big 15.0-inch infotainment system that will employ an AI-powered onboard assistant.
The fresh tech offering will also extend to a new standard augmented-reality head-up display.
Occupant comfort, meanwhile, will be enhanced by massaging seats that feature 10 air cushions in the base and backrest, with 14-way adjustment.
A powerful 14-speaker 700W Harman Kardon sound system will be optional.
Even though it’s much bigger, in Europe the ID.7 has already been positioned as a rival for both the Tesla Model 3 and other EVs like the Hyundai IONIQ 6.
Volkswagen Australia is yet to confirm the ID.7 – let alone the newly revealed ID.7 Tourer – for local release, but with the general decline in sales of both family sedans and wagons here, the German brand’s flagship electric fastback and wagon may not make it Down Under.
