Spada unveils manic Monza version of Codatronca

Italian design studio busts out a supercharged spyder version of its Corvette-propelled tearaway

Italian father-son design duo Ercole and Paolo Spada have unleashed a hardcore Monza-badged version of the outrageous Codatronca revealed three years ago.

The original Codatronca (Italian for "truncated tail") was inspired by the Kamm-tailed Alfas Ercole penned during his tenure at Zagato in the 1960s, but the Monza version is an even more extreme one-off that was commissioned by Monza-based purveyor of luxury goods, Aznom.

Aznom, which designed the interior of the car, conceived it as a vehicle to showcase the "connection between the world of car design and luxury", and its Monza moniker is a tribute to the venerable circuit.

Although retaining the basic characteristics of the 2008 Codatronca, the Monza derivative harks back to the spyders of the 1960s, even though its bodywork and interior makes extensive use of carbonfibre.

The Monza’s backbone is an aluminium tubular chassis, clothed in a lightweight carbonfibre/composite body. Motive power comes from a Corvette Z06-based 7.0-litre V8, but a pair of rotrex centrifugal superchargers ramp up power and torque to a whopping 530kW and 880Nm respectively. A six-speed manual gearbox channels drive to the rear wheels.

No surprises, then, that its maker claims a 0-100km/h split of 3.0sec (in first gear!) and a top whack of 335km/h for the 1180kg roadster.

The technical package rounded off by grippy Pirelli PZero Corsa rubber wrapped around lightweight Oz Ultra-leggera wheels, while its fully adjustable suspension system and Brembo stoppers are said to be the same as those used by FIA GT3 racers.

Befitting its Monza suffix, the racy Codatronca gains Sabelt seats and belts, and the Aim steering wheel integrates instrumentation with data acquisition. The on-board Smartycam camera records HD videos with the overlay of telemetry and data captured by the steering wheel.

Now the bad news – the Codatronca Monza is purely a one off showpony, but Spadaconcept says it plans to produce a spyder (barchetta) version on demand.
