Spark of optimism with new Barina
New hatch set to complement Holden's existing light car rangeHolden will unveil its all-new Barina Spark at next week's Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.
Joining the current Barina hatch and sedan range, the new five-door Barina Spark is a welcome addition to Holden's aging light car portfolio, bringing new style, a more extensive standard safety equipment list and new engine technology to the range.
Barina Spark is powered by a 1.2-litre DOHC four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission to deliver a combined fuel economy figure of just 5.6L/100km (combined), making it the most economical car in the current Holden line-up.
Available in Barina Spark CD and Barina Spark CDX variants, the new hatch brings General Motors latest global design Down Under for the first time, and includes not only sporty new style, but standard stability control, alloy wheels, fog lamps and a rear spoiler to the entire Barina Spark range.
"This is a very style-conscious market and with Barina Spark we have a really fresh and energetic design that breaks the 'cute car' mould," explained Holden executive director of sales, marketing and aftersales, John Elsworth.
"It's fun, fuel efficient and offers class-leading safety features and value-for-money in the best Holden tradition."
Looking more like a three-door, the Barina Spark five-door hatch sports hidden rear door handles to accentuate its dynamic, wedge-shape profile and further improve aerodynamics.
The front mask boasts dramatic, elongated headlamps which flank Holden's signature family grille, empahsising a "sharp-edged, stand-alone character", says Holden.
Inside, the trendy new cabin mixes fun with functionality, and includes a motorcycle-inspried instrument cluster mounted on the steering column with cool ice-blue backlighting. Colour-coded inlays flow from the instrument panel into the front doors.
On the safety front, and Barina Spark includes the aforementioned stability control as standard while also adding ant-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and traction control. A total of six airbags are also offered as standard on both CD and CDX model variants.
