Sporty electric Kia coupe concept destined for Geneva

New tease suggest Kia is readying an exciting electric sports car you'll actually want to drive

Kia has teased a single picture of the sporty new pure-electric coupe it will reveal at the Geneva motor show on March 5.

The shadowy image is said to depict a pure-electric coupe claimed to be as exciting to drive as it is to look at.

The head-on shot doesn't reveal if the car a two-door or a more on-trend four-door coupe, but its low ride height, traditional long-bonnet, wide track and flared arches suggest the concept could potentially be a zero-emission alternative to a Toyota 86.

Designed to "make the heart beat that bit faster", an LED light signature that stretches across its face, and there appears to be a playful tribute to the original Mk1 Ford Escort dog and bone grille and lamp arrangements.

Kia hasn't released any other pics but inside we'd expect a typical minimalist digital dash that will incorporate twin screens to broadcast the view behind as the concept lacks traditional door mirrors.

No details have been announced regarding what powers the small coupe but with styling cues referencing the original Escort, it could potentially be rear-wheel drive.

Explaining the reasoning behind the new concept's styling, Kia Motors Europe design vice president Gregory Guillaume said: "Automotive design is about capturing the heart and making it beat that bit faster for that bit longer – and we believe that there’s absolutely no reason why that should change simply because the car is electric".

Reasserting its credentials as a true driver's car, Guillaume added the concept will have the performance to live up to its looks, causing "the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you drive it".

Kia is likely to continue teasing its new coupe over the coming days ahead of its launch.

The concept's production potential remains unknown but some of its styling could go on to inspire the next-generation Stinger replacement.

As well as the sporty pure-electric Kia coupe, the brand will also unveil its new XCeed, a small jacked-up version of the Kia Ceed Sportwagon available in Europe.
