One of Mercedes-Benz's most iconic cars, the famed SL, is sheduled for a fresh new look in 2012 and these images are our first glimpse.
Though it's hard to pick out any particular design cues -- the overall size and long-bonnet profile do stay true to the current car's dimensions -- thanks to the Carparazzi photographers, it's clear there are a number of changes in the wings. Well-founded rumour has it that this will be an all-new car, sitting on a different platform from the current R230's.
The SL, or Super Light as the abbreviation once conveyed (the modern cars weigh close to 2 tonnes), features a more upright front grille, which has been updated to conform with stricter levels of pedestrian protection.
Mercedes' new SL is also expected to take a leaf from the SLS AMG's book of front-end styling, with headlights and snout that imitate the flagship sports cars'.
The SLS AMG could become the new 'face' for the German marque's evolving design ethos that may eventually permeate all models, however the next generation SL's design may not be quite as confronting as the SLS AMG's, which has been criticised in some quarters.
The 2012 model Mercedes-Benz SL will retain its metal folding roof for all-weather driving and is expected to make its motor show debut later in 2012.
