It might look like a mobile bundle of papier-mache, but what really lies beneath this disguise-clad conveyance is the next generation of the Smart ForTwo.
Hinted at in the Smart Fourjoy concept featured at last year’s Frankfurt show, the new ForTwo Smart – caught testing by the spy photographers at Automedia – is expected to get small dimensional increases (reportedly focussing mainly on width) and a significant interior redesign to maintain a segment-competitive funky factor.
But while the general driveline will stay true to the original ForTwo concept, the upright little car will give birth to a stretched, four-door version expected to be dubbed Smart ForTwo+2. This will be the first four-door Smart since the failed ForFour model that shared its underpinnings with the Mitsubishi Colt introduced concurrently in 2004.
Avoiding suggestions it will masquerade as a true four-passenger car, the stretched ForTwo will offer at least the remote possibility that extra passengers will be able to climb aboard for a limited period.
The rear-engined platform of both versions will be a development of the existing ForTwo's architecture.
Powerplant options for the smart are expected to include atmo and turbo 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol, hybrid and full-electric. It is believed the 0.8-litre turbo-diesel version sold in Europe will be scrapped.
And the 2014 Smart ForTwo will have a Renault equivalent – the next generation Twingo, which will be sold only as a five-door.
