SPY PICS: 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe snapped

Coupe version of large new Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV is expected next year, featuring lighter weight and improved aerodynamics

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe won't stray too far stylistically from the current model, if the latest round of spy shots are any guide.

Expected to be launched in Europe some time in 2019, the big new coupe-crossover will essentially be identical to the new GLE SUV from the waistline down, but will be topped off by a lower, sloping roofline in the style of BMW's X6, which is likewise a fastback version of the X5 wagon.

It is difficult to tell because of the slapped-on camouflaging, but the character lines in the GLE Coupe's side profile could be a little different to the current model's, with a new, upswept lower crease and the deletion of the upper crease running below the door handles.

At the C-pillar, it appears the swept-back window line will be truncated with a close-to-vertical cut-off, while the rear window itself could be a tad larger than before.

The grille, with its prominent three-pointed star, looks conceptually similar, although the relationship with the lower, centre and outrigger apertures has changed to deliver a lower, swoopier appearance.

The rear-end looks to have been given new proportions too, with a bit less accent on the vertical than previously and, possibly, a lower and more convenient loading height.

Our spy photographers also managed to capture a few images of the regular GLE wagon's interior as well, which show what appears to be a more restrained design approach than before, featuring a wide, flat-screened instrument cluster that dispenses with the current GLE's layout.

Word is that the powertrains will include a range of inline six-cylinder and V8 engines, with AMG versions adopting a 4.0-litre turbo V8. It's also likely the 2019 GLE Coupe range will include a 400d turbo-diesel model.

Rumours indicate too that the next GLE Coupe will be more aerodynamic than previously (0.30Cd), and that it will tip the scales at less than two tonnes – both factors which should help fuel economy. Base models are expected to adopt rear-wheel drive, with AWD reserved for higher-spec versions.

With the new Mercedes-Benz GLE (previously known as the M-Class) due for its European introduction this year, the New GLE Coupe is expected to be unveiled in Europe some time in 2019, four years after the original's launch in 2015.
