Work has begun on the full-size, high-end, seven-seat Jeep Wagoneer luxury SUV, as you can see here in spy photographs that show the Range Rover rival testing on US roads.
There have been numerous rumours and even official confirmation from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles itself back in 2014 that the Wagoneer would be on sale by 2017, but there's been no word since then about when the all-new large SUV would land.
Previous reports suggested the range-topping Jeep will share much in common with the current fifth-generation RAM trucks that first went on sale in the US in 2018.
Beneath the skin that means the Wagoneer and the larger, long-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer will ride on a relatively unsophisticated ladder frame chassis but adopt a development of the truck's multi-link rear suspension that comes with the option of air springs.
Under the bonnet it makes sense the big Jeep will share the RAM 1500's electrified 3.6-litre V6 and the larger 5.7-litre HEMI V8 that pushes out around 300kW.
If that's not enough to haul your three-row SUV along the road, a leaked document from a transmission supplier back in 2018 revealed that Jeep is plotting a version powered by the borderline-certifiable 536kW supercharged 6.2-litre V8 from the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.
Despite the heavy camo of these prototypes, our spies suggest Jeep engineers are racing to develop both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer for launch as soon as the middle of 2020, but there's no word yet if the big Jeep has been engineered for right-hand drive markets like Australia.
