Our European spy photographers have captured pre-launch images of a long-wheelbase Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX pottering around Wolfsburg with pretty much all of its sporty design cues on full display.
Devoid of any kind of camouflage but missing all of its model and variant-specific badging, the hotter GTX-spec seven-seat electric people-mover is fitted with a completely new front bumper that mimics the lower frontal design elements of the flagship VW Golf R hot hatch and is finished with sportier-looking black honeycomb mesh.
Other unique touches include unique five-spoke alloy wheels, black D-pillar elements and the omission of the standard ID. Buzz LWB’s square window cut-out behind the B-pillar.
The rest of the body looks identical to the standard version, with very few indicators of the extra performance on tap from its higher-output EV powertrain.
There’s little doubt that customer-spec cars will be fitted with GTX badging somewhere on the exterior and we already know the cabin will be awash with red trim elements, sporty touches and matching GTX logos courtesy of an official teaser in October last year.
Volkswagen revealed powertrain details earlier this year when it confirmed the ID. Buzz GTX would deliver 250kW courtesy of a dual-motor powertrain that would send it to 100km/h in a hot hatch-poaching 6.4 seconds.
Odds are the long-wheelbase GTX will feature the same 91kWh battery pack as its lesser stablemates, while the jury is still out on the short-wheelbase version – it could inherit the same 81kWh unit as the standard five-seaters or step up a level and match the seven-seater.
Regardless, the GTX variants will not be the economy kings of the VW ID. Buzz line-up because their dual-motor powertrains consume more energy, with the sportier electric people-movers anticipated to be able to cover between 400-450km on a single charge.
Expect an official reveal for the dynamic duo either later this year or in early 2024 – around the same time Volkswagen finally begins its EV rollout in Australia, starting with the ID.4 and ID.5 medium SUVs, followed by the ID.3 hatch and, in 2025, the ID. Buzz and Buzz Cargo delivery van.
