Aston Martin’s new flagship supercar has just been spotted testing in Europe and it looks every bit as mean as it ought to.
Tipped to be called either the DBS or Vanquish, the British marque’s new Ferrari-hunter clearly uses the recently-launched DB12 as the basis for its exterior design, but rightly dials the aggression up to 11 given it will retain a vicious forced-induction petrol V12.
All but guaranteed to out-muscle the old DBS Ultimate, the new-generation DBS/Vanquish will output more than 566kW/900Nm from what’s thought to be an enhanced version of Aston’s familiar twin-turbo 5.2-litre powerplant – possibly even approaching the 600kW/1000Nm marks in preparation for Ferrari’s upcoming 812 Superfast replacement.
Rumours have been swirling for a while now that the new DBS/Vanquish, which will clearly be lower and slinkier than the DB12 with a wider grille and aggressively vented bonnet, would evolve from a super GT into more of a supercar, with some even suggesting a mid-mounted engine layout was on the cards as per the mid-engined Valkyrie and Valhalla hypercars.
These images prove otherwise, but there’s little doubt the top-shelf British coupe is well on its way to leaving the GT market behind – which is no surprise since the DB12 now has that segment covered – freeing up the flagship super car to focus on battling high-end exotica from the likes of Ferrari.
Other angry design cues include a ducktail spoiler, quad exhaust outlets, vast brakes and an integrated front splitter.
The outgoing DBS was already a savage beast and yet Aston executives have gone on record promising its replacement will be “completely different”, bolstering the theory it’s going to leave the high-end GT market behind.
Odds are this will be Aston Martin’s last internal-combustion hero coupe, given the brand is planning a major electrification move that had initially touted the DB12, new Vantage and this model for plug-in hybrid powertrain makeovers, but that hasn’t eventuated.
