Barely a month after the global reveal of the new-generation BMW 1 Series, the all-new premium hatchback’s swoopy four-door sibling – the 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe – has been spotted undergoing development testing.
Despite being shrouded in busy black and white camouflage, the design similarities between the hatch and its sleeker four-door ‘coupe’ sibling are clear for all to see, especially at the front-end where we find the same small headlights and rounded nose design.
Beyond that, however, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe – which will again aim at the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedans – looks to have lost a lot of its predecessor’s machoness by presenting much softer body lines, a meeker body kit, smaller and more conservative wheels and a seemingly higher ride height.
Whatever the case, the new version of BMW’s smallest sedan will be noticeably bigger than the model it replaces and available with a range of upgraded powertrains offering more power and better fuel efficiency, though Australian examples will likely miss out on mild-hybrid tech as per the 1 Series.
But the new body will be underpinned by a new platform and complemented by an all-new interior featuring the very latest technology and creature comforts.
Odds are the Australian line-up will comprise an entry-level 220 and flagship M235 xDrive as per the current model range locally, leaving plenty of room in between for new variants and special-editions to be added at a later date.
Given the amount of camouflage fitted to the prototype you see here, we’d expect an official reveal to take place either late this year or in the first half of 2025 ahead of an Australian release later next year, thereby giving the new 1 Series about a full year alone in the spotlight.
The current 2 Series Gran Coupe is the slowest-selling compact model in BMW Australia’s arsenal so far this year, with just 316 examples being delivered between January and June compared to 530 for the 1 Series hatch and an impressive 900 for the 2 Series coupe and convertible.
